The 2009 Laser Nationals were held in New Plymouth which is about as far away as one can get from Napier. Being directly opposite on the West Coast and exposed to the roaring westerlies, there are also at least five mountain ranges that one has to skirt to get there. If you were not towing a trailer and were not terrified of heights and road slips you could go over the passes. Fear however sent us on the circular path to the district known as Taranaki dominated by the towering volcano of Mount Egmont.
Once we got there, the howling winds and giant waves did not do much to dispel these fears. All I know is that I was pretty smug at having brought my golf clubs along. Gill had foolishly brought a Laser along and felt somewhat obliged to try and see if it could survive the reefs and breakers.
Well although the results somewhat unfairly record a DNF (20 minutes is a pretty mean cut-off limit), she actually finished all the races which few others could claim to have done. Breakages this time were limited to a sprung rivet and the loss of boom block, quickly repaired on the spot.
Well the next big regatta is now in Halifax. Seems to get windier as we get older?
