Young Torgan at the age of 6 months has already developed the stubble customary of the modern man and takes a moment to admire something rarely seen in recent times. Yup, it’s blue sky.

New Zealand in winter is wet, cold and overcast, much like New Zealand in summer. Throw in a few howling gales, monsoons, snow, earthquakes, avalanches and sneezing swine and you have the tried and tested coaching programme adopted by the All Blacks. What’s missing now is time actually spent practising and some competitors.

360 are expected at the Laser World Masters near Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the week from 30 August. The event organisers hanker to move in the very best of circles. Someone really ought to have warned the St Margaret’s Bay yacht club about inviting Laser sailors.
