Borne to Gill (21) some 40 years ago, it was Elna that first
tacked a seam that’s held fast. Elna was
a worthy and trusty companion and had been called upon to resolve many a rift
that had ended in tears. Humming away,
her needle sharp sense of fun often had Gill in stitches. Patches were a strong suit but she also had a
gift (sic) for mending cuffs and taking up slacks. However when called upon to replace linings
weathered by UV and mould, Elna took one last deep breath and bowed out knowing
it would all end in curtains. Sadly the celebratory
bottle of snake oil has been put back on the shelf to await the needs of her
replacement – another sewing machine set for the next 40 years!
