Frosty Start

It’s not long now before we set off to drink Canada dry. A fair amount of elastoplast went into strapping up the wrists for Australia so 18 months later the cast may need to be well and truly plastered for this trip. A limited amount of leave will mean that we will not be able to stop off in Toronto or Boston so friends and family in those centres can breathe a sigh of relief as these forex shy scroungers pass them by.

In theory, the trip should be to a warmer Northern climate, although the Ireland venture in 2001 has already disproved that theory. Someone definitely got the global warming theory all wrong this year. We have had more days of frost than we ever experienced in our first two winters here and we are only 15 days into June. “Good for the blush on apples and cheeks, kills the bugs, hardens the wax on yer snowboards, bring it on”. Yeah right, especially if you’re trying to get in some practice for the Worlds.

With no sailing on we headed up into the hills and 3 hours later found Whakapapa village preparing for the ski season. Although chilly with some early snow still on the side of the roads, we parked the car at the Chateau, donned our boots and headed off on a tramp to Taranaki Falls. Never found them, but there is now a point on this track which will be remembered as Husband Falls.

What news reaches us about Zumababwe tends to be pretty depressing. Almost as depressing as the price of Castle Lager which is $2,50 (about R13) a bottle here. There’s been reason to crack open a few as the SA teams have done well this year. It helps the betting kitty to have dual allegiances where our flip-flop support backs the side that is winning. If only it was that easy to pick winners on the stock market.
