Giant Hops - A Beerstalker's View

We were very pleased to meet a very pleasant and fine young man who had found his way by coach to Napier over the Easter weekend arriving Saturday evening.

Was it coincidence but the very next morning, eggs made of chocolate were to found hidden around the garden? This fine young man who insisted on being called Charlie laid no claim to their manufacture or to any factory experience. Nonetheless some little boys here still speak in hushed tones of this friendly giant who was able to find eggs amongst the tree tops. A skill much sought after by the fruit pickers in this area.

As Charlie will be able to attest, we live surrounded by orchards but perhaps with not enough beanstalks to keep a giant happy. Instead he seemed quite content to take in the views from Bluff Hill looking across Napier. In retrospect it was probably a mistake to mention the Redwoods which he took in with one giant stride, and then with another he had soon ascended Te Mata Peak.  Had the weather permitted the following day, he would have waltzed up to Bell Rock.

Instead the giant puddle that is Lake Tutira and the Great White Pines in the Mohi Reserve were all that could be fitted in before a stop at the Linden Winery and vineyards.  While the rain steadily set in during the afternoon, Charlie found time to help Gill with the strange buzz coming from her computer screen.

After Charlie left to hop over to Fiji, the areas south of us received over 400mm which led to severe floods and washed away bridges at Te Awanga and Waimarama.  Fortunately the bridge across to the Rose and Shamrock remains intact.
